A.M. BEST ISSUES SIX-MONTH REVIEW OFPROPERTY/CASUALTY, LIFE/HEALTH INSURERS

 OLDWICK, N.J., Sept. 27 /PRNewswire/ -- A.M. Best Company today released the results of its six-month review of property/ casualty and life/health insurers. Best's Ratings were changed for 48 property/casualty companies and four life/health insurers. Three property/casualty firms remain under review while one life/health company was removed from "under review" status.
 A total of 107 property/casualty insurers were reviewed for the six months 1993. Of those insurers whose ratings were changed since Best's Ratings were originally assigned during the spring and early summer of 1993, 14 companies' ratings were upgraded or raised, six received an initial Best's letter rating and two received initial Financial Performance Indexes. Fourteen insurers' ratings were downgraded or lowered. Also, four companies were placed under some form of state supervision or into liquidation.
 For the life/health industry, one insurer received an initial Best's letter rating, while another received an initial FPI. Of the 18 companies that were reviewed for six months 1993, one company was downgraded and one was placed into liquidation.
 A.M. Best reviewed the six-month financial results of 2,298 property/casualty companies (or 94 percent of the total reviewed during the spring), and 1,194 life/health companies (or 85 percent of the total reviewed during the spring), excluding 335 "NA-1" (Special Data Filings) Ratings.
 A.M. Best conducts formal rating reviews on annual, six-month and nine-month financial results, or as needed.
