A.M. BEST ISSUES NINE-MONTH REVIEW OF LIFE/HEALTH INSURERS

OLDWICK, N.J., Dec. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- A.M. Best Company today released the results of its nine-month rating review of life/health insurance companies. Best's Ratings were changed for 27 insurers, nine companies were placed on Best's Rating Watch List, one company was removed from the Rating Watch List and one company was affirmed and released from "under review" status.
Of the 27 rating changes, 14 life/health insurers were lowered or downgraded, six were the result of the insurer being placed under some form of state supervision, five experienced a significant change in operations, one changed ownership and one was removed from state supervision. Seven of the companies whose ratings were lowered also remain "under review." A.M. Best reviewed the nine-month financial results of 1,185 companies, 85 percent of the Best's Ratings that were originally assigned during the spring of 1992 with the exception of 268 companies with "NA-1" (Special Data Filing) ratings.
These rating actions were published today in Best's Rating Monitor, a supplement to the weekly Best's Insurance Management Reports. The monitor gives a cumulative list of rating actions taken throughout the year. A.M. Best conducts formal rating reviews based on annual, six-month and nine-month financial results, or as needed.
