A. L. LABORATORIES ANNOUNCES KEY MANAGEMENT APPOINTMENTS AT ITS BARRE-NATIONAL SUBSIDIARY

 FORT LEE, N.J., Dec. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- A. L. Laboratories, Inc. (NYSE: BMD), a leading manufacturer of specialty pharmaceuticals, today formally announced the appointments of four senior executives at Barre- National, Inc., its liquid pharmaceuticals subsidiary. The positions involve management in the areas of quality affairs, operations and engineering, finance, and research and development.
 Commenting on the appointments, Jeffrey E. Smith, executive vice president and member of the office of the chief executive of A. L. Laboratories, Inc. said, "The addition of these four highly experienced and accomplished individuals adds tremendous strength to the current operations of Barre-National and to our U. S. Pharmaceutical capabilities. These executives join George Barrett, who was named as president of Barre in August 1991, and Thomas Darby, appointed as senior vice president of sales and marketing in late 1991, to form a seasoned management team that should enable us to realize Barre's exceptional potential."
 William C. Clements joined Barre this past summer as senior vice president, quality affairs, with responsibility for all quality functions. Mr. Clements, 55, has extensive management experience spanning over 25 years in the pharmaceutical industry. He was most recently vice president for Quality Assurance/USA at Marion Merrell Dow Inc., after having held a similar position at Marion Laboratories. Earlier, he served in a number of engineering and quality control capacities at Baxter Travenol Laboratories, Inc.
 Edward J. Oglesby was named senior vice president of operations and engineering in August. Mr. Oglesby, 51, most recently served for 4 years as vice president of operations at Fujisawa Pharmaceutical and brings nearly 30 years of facilities management experience to Barre. Prior, during 13 years at Baxter Travenol Laboratories, Inc., he held several plant management and engineering positions which included responsibility for the largest parenteral facility in the world.
 Michael P. Gendron, 45, was appointed vice president of finance in August. For the last 15 years, he has served in various financial capacities at Bausch & Lomb Inc., most recently as corporate director of financial projects. His experience at Bausch & Lomb included serving as vice president, finance for Optical Systems, and managing several audit and planning functions both for domestic and overseas operations.
 Earlier this month, Stanley A. Kaplan, Ph.D. was named senior vice president for research and development with responsibility for A. L. Laboratories' U. S. Pharmaceutical research and development activities. Dr. Kaplan, 54, most recently was president and chief executive officer of Pharmetrix, a pharmaceutical research and development company. He was formerly senior vice president for research and development at Liposome Technology Inc.; and he served as executive director of the development division of Lederle Laboratories' Medical Research Division. He began his impressive professional career at Hoffmann-LaRoche, Inc., where he spent 18 years in the areas of pharmacokinetics, biopharmaceutics and drug metabolism, and was associate director of the experimental therapeutics division. Dr. Kaplan is the author of over 90 scientific papers, articles and chapters; is a member of a number of editorial advisory boards; and is a Fellow of many professional societies, including the American Institute of Chemists, American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists, and the American College of Clinical Pharmacology.
