A-B says its can saves aluminum.

Anheuser-Busch, Inc., has designed a new can that "will save millions of pounds of aluminum each year," a brewery spokesperson reported.

Officials said last week that the cans feature a lid that is one-eighth-inch smaller in diameter than the lids currently used by Anheuser-Busch and most other beverage companies.

Since Anheuser-Busch uses more than 17 billion cans annually, the relatively small trim will reduce the amount of aluminum in its cans by 20 million pounds a year, the spokesperson said.

The savings in energy, the company said, is equivalent to the electricity needed to supply the residential needs of a city the size of St. Louis for more than five weeks.

Patrick Stokes, president of Anheuser-Busch, said the company has already begun to share the new design and technology with other beverage companies, including softdrink companes, to encourage widespread adoption of the new cans.

"It took two years of research," Stokes reported, "and the cooperation of companies inside and outside Anheuser-Busch, to develop this. "

The company said it will begin converting to this new can for all of its brands this month. In addition, Metal Container Corp., Anheuser-Busch's container manufacturing subsidiary, will make the new cans available to soft drink can customers.
