A weekend of vintage automobile racing in Monterey

Pack a picnic and a blanket to spread iton, bring the kids, and set off for an afternoon of vintage automobile racing. Morning warmups, demonstrations, and parades can also be part of the fun. On August 21, 22, and 23 at Laguna Seca Raceway in Monterey, California, you can see several generations of vigorous old machines in action at the 14th Annual Monterey Historic Automobile Races.

Automobiles that compete on this specialweekend are from the mid-1900s down to the mid- 1970s, representing every era of the sport--and both the quality of the machines and the level of competition are very high.

Spectators will be able not only to see theraces and hear the roar of engines, but to inspect the cars in an open paddock area, to converse with owners and drivers, and to photograph some extremely fine examples of antique automobiles.

Raceway terrain is ideal for the onlooker. The 1.9-mile roughly circular track has a hilly infield that's fine for family picnicking, with excellent views of the track's curves and straightaways.

Organizers of the event are General RacingLimited of Santa Barbara and the Sports Car Racing Association of the Monterey Peninsula. Each year, an automotive corporation involved with racing is asked to present a display of past and present cars. This year, the 75th anniversary of the Chevrolet marque is being honored, with a concours-type display of historic Corvettes, McLarens, Scarabs, and Chaparrals on the infield all three days. Saturday, some of these automobiles will also perform on the track.
