A weekend for dance lovers.

Byline: The Register-Guard

Dance fans have a wide array of choices this weekend in Eugene, from new work by dance faculty at the University of Oregon to a hip-hop show at the Hult Center and a dance company headed by Miss Belly Dancer USA 2012.

The UO will present "Dance 2013," a faculty concert, at 8 p.m. today, Friday and Saturday in the Robinson Theatre, 1109 Old Campus Lane.

The concert will offer new and repertory works by dance faculty members, featuring dance students as well as local guest artist Cynthia Gutierrez-Garner.

"Dance 2013" will include one piece by guest artist Mark Haim, a Seattle- based choreographer and recipient of the UO's Boekelheide Creativity Award for 2012-13.

Performed by graduate students and undergraduates, Haim's "Parade" is a rumination on the triumph of human dignity in the face of obstacles. The dancers will work almost entirely in unison from beginning to end, with neither entrances nor exits.

The program also will include "Breadlines and Dreams" by Department of Dance chairwoman Jenifer Craig, a reverie on the photography and music of the Great Depression.

Other faculty works include Brad Garner and Gutierrez- Garner's midcentury jazz duet, "Swoon"; Brad Garner's exploration of Eastern philosophy, "a-'wak"; Rita Honka's comment on isolation and intimacy, "Union"; Shannon Mockli's comical quartet "Meeting Roger"; and themes of convergence and collision in Walter Kennedy's "Fault Boundaries."

The concert also will feature a new solo improvisational score performed by Shannon Mockli, inspired by fellow faculty member Steven Chatfield.

Tickets are $10, $5 for students and seniors, at 541-346-4363 and tickets.uoregon.edu.

Friday at the Hult Center brings a night of hip-hop, jazz and funk at Work Dance Company's "Wonderland Live" concert, which starts at 7:30 p.m. in the Soreng Theater.

The show features guest artists from Kings Krew, Evolve, Zapp, UO Dance Team, UO Jam Squad, Dance Northwest, Dance Factory, Mission to Mars and Flex Studios.

Tickets are $17, $15 for students, at 541-682-5000 and HultCenter.org.

Also Friday, belly dancing fans can head to Cozmic, 199 W. Eighth Ave., for the Middle Eastern Dance Guild of Eugene's sixth annual Alternative Night.

The show features Salem troupe Belly Funk, which combines traditional belly dance with hip-hop, jazz, modern and other influences. It's under the direction of Cassandra Rose, Miss Belly Dancer USA 2012.

Showtime is 8:30 p.m. Admission is free, but a donation of $5 is suggested.
