A very arresting comedy.

VEXED (BBC2, Sunday) ... what a revelation!

Why hasn't this deliciously tongue in cheek - at times black - comedy drama been hyped to the heavens? Created and written by Howard Overman - give that man a proper second series, for this (like Sherlock and The Great Outdoors) is a mere three-parter - Vexed follows the mixed fortunes of an odd couple of detectives, Jack Armstrong (Toby Stephens) and Kate Bishop (Lucy Punch).

She's conscientious and always trying to do the right thing - if not always succeeding - while he seems to like the idea of playing detective, but is lazy, unprofessional and, basically, incompetent.

He's also the source for the majority of the laughs - helped greatly by the fact that, just like Leslie Nielsen did, playing the blessed Frank Drebin in Police Squad!, he keeps his face straight while saying and doing the most hilariously inappropriate things.

But Punch's character has her moments, too - in the opener, she broke her husband's kneecaps in the mistaken belief that he was having an affair.

If it can keep up this pace, this could be another cop classic.
