A treat for tomato fans.

THE past few years have seen a rise in the number of people making their own chutneys and jams with sales of kilner jars rocketing.

They are certainly a great way to impress lunch guests and also make thoughtful gifts.

Get into the habit yourself with Lakeland's recipe for green tomato chutney. INGREDIENTS Makes approx 8 x 1lb jars (try Lakeland's kilner jars, 3 for PS8.49) 10 medium chillies 15g fresh ginger 625g onions, chopped 500g apples, chopped 2kg green tomatoes, diced 500g sugar 570ml vinegar 2tsp sea salt Pepper to taste METHOD 1. Tie the chillies and the ginger in a muslin square, then place in a large preserving pan with all the other ingredients. 2. Stir well and bring to the boil, then reduce the heat and simmer until the mixture is reduced to a thick chutney. 3. Remove the muslin parcel and pour into warm jars.
