A third Manc duel over boy wonder Max; HOTLINE.

Byline: Alan Nixon; Dave Kidd; Steve Bates; Tom Hopkinson; Dean Jones; Alan Oliver; Mel Henderson

MANCHESTER giants CITY and UNITED are in a race to sign CREWE wonder boy Max Clayton - the third major battle between the two this summer.

City, who missed out on Robin van Persie and Angelo Henriquez, are prepared to stump up pounds 5million for the 18-year-old striker.

HotLine can reveal that Sir Alex Ferguson tried to buy Clayton as part of the swoop for Nick Powell in the summer but agreed to delay the move.

However, City want to disrupt the gentleman's agreement between Ferguson and old pal Dario Gradi at Crewe with a bumper offer.

City see Clayton as a certain England international of the future and think his cool finishing will make him a star of the next decade.

Boss Roberto Mancini has given the move his blessing although Clayton would probably be farmed out on loan if he can be signed.

League One Crewe won promotion and do not want to lose Clayton but, with the two major forces scrambling for his signature, they may have no choice.
