IT has been a sad week for the Midlands, we have lost two of our greatest characters. Cyrille Regis was a shining example of a professional footballer who was a beacon to young black players, not only professional players but those too who are playing in the parks, on the works pitches and in our schools.

Now we hear that Ed Doolan, a pioneer in human rights over the airwaves, has sadly passed away. I crossed swords on several occasions with Ed, both on the radio and also in the pages of the Birmingham Mail.

So rest in peace Cyrille and Ed, you both left your mark in the Midlands. Why not give a posthumous star on the Walk of Stars on Broad Street for these Midland greats? S T Vaughan, Yardley Wood Ed Doolan and Cyrille Regis both left their mark in the Midlands
