Homely look at far-off places

BRIGHOUSE-based artist Peter Brook and Colne Valley photographer Richard Littlewood are fond of walking the moors together and finding subject matter suited to both their artistic interests.

And their joint exhibition opening tomorrow at the Smith Art Gallery, Brighouse (till January 15) will reflect their respective interpretative skills.

They think nothing, normally, of risking life and limb trotting over snowbound landscapes, but ironically it was a piece of wet cardboard in Brighouse which caused Peter to break his leg on a Christmas shopping trip last year.

Laid up at home, after a week in hospital, and with no chance of getting to his upstairs studio, Peter used the front sitting room as a makeshift studio. Sitting on a commode provided by Social Services, he found this gave him the ideal height for painting, with a dining chair used as an easel.

That the pictures he produced turned out so well, with many of them recalling the artist's wry humour, is testament to his patience and drive in a testing time.

And out of this period of incarceration has emerged a fine book of the paintings, with a typically ironic title - Peter Brook abroad - But Not Going Too Far.

rMembers of Kirklees Associated Arts Group have staged their Christmas exhibition at Huddersfield Sports Centre Gallery (till January 15) and have provided a varied and interesting display.

Beryl Conroy portrays an inviting landscape in her oil, Down to the Sea, Cloughton, while splashy colours work well in Olwen Kitson's water-colour scene at Rowen, Wales.

Margaret Broadstock is also a skilled watercolorist, whether depicting sculpture, flags and sightseers in Rockefeller Plaza, New York or Foie Gras Geese in South-West France.

Tom King's stylised treatment of Marsden Moors and Mills, in oils, makes for a striking image, and David Whiting's pastel is a pleasing evocation of a familiar subject, Flatford Mill.

Well-presented still life paintings are Hazel Hirst's Summertime (water-colour) and Pat Pridmore's Vegetable Still Life (pastel).

Andrew Jenkin's water-colour, Beech Trees at Greenfield, has plenty of realism and good treatment of sun and shadow.
