A new generation of drummers.
The Percussive Arts Society (PAS), Lawton, Oklahoma, has developed a community outreach program to benefit area elementary schoolchildren. Under the interactive "Drum Roots" program, children learn basic rhythmic patterns and how to play the instruments in cooperation with one another to create "an ensemble of layered rhythms." Students also learn how drums make different sounds and how drumming is still used in some cultures for communication and in music for ceremonies and celebrations.[ILLUSTRATION OMITTED]
Drum Roots presenter Jim Harris, a trained interactive drumming facilitator, works with directors of community service agencies, public school programs, and rehabilitation centers to design drumming activities appropriate to their goals and those they serve. PAS developed the Drum Roots program, which is made possible by local, regional, and national grants, to complement existing community programs focused on arts education and mental and physical health and wellness.
