A modest proposal.

Like all true Australians, Ramla Giirre is a beach bum. But stripping down to her bikini isn't an option for Giirre, a Muslim who emigrated from Somalia as a girl. Enter the burkini, a bathing costume that combines traditional modesty with comfort and a dash of style. "I remembered that, as a young girl, I had missed a lot of things, like swimming. So I created something that I could wear while being active," says Aheda Zanetti, its Lebanese Australian designer. Unlike a burka, the suit doesn't cover the face. Suggests Ramla's sister Lucky, "Why not call it funkini?"
