A million rally round the flag.

One million Italians yesterday protested at the threat to the country's unity posed by northern breakaway leader Umberto Bossi.

At a mass meeting in Venice last week, Bossi said Italy's flag "belonged in the toilet" and he declared his self-styled state of Padania "ready for action".

"Even England has allowed a parliament for Scotland," he told the rally.

But yesterday in Venice and in Milan, crowds turned out to protest against any move towards a split.

They were entertained by live music and dance, including ballerina Carla Fracci who danced in Milan, wrapped in a red, white and green shawl - the colours of Italy's national flag.
