Acas began when a voluntary conciliation and arbitration service was set up by the government of 1896.

It changed its name to the Industrial Relations Service in 1960 and then the Conciliation and Advisory Service in 1972, but the basic service was much the same and remained under governmental control.

In 1974 the modern organisation was born. Renamed the Conciliation and Arbitration Service, it was moved away from government and set up with an independent council to direct it. Advisory was added to the name in 1975 to reflect the full range of services on offer.

The organisation gives advice and guidance to 750,000 callers a year via its telephone helplines, and helps to promote good practice at 550 or so training sessions run each year.
