A family-run garage with Regent quality; dealership OFTHEWEEK.

KEVIN WHITE speaks to Gwyn Evans of Regent Garage in Criccieth Q How long has Regent Garage been selling cars for? We are a family-run company which my father set up in 1967. My brother Peter and I are the second generation of the Evans family to run Regent Garage.

I''ve always worked within the motor trade, be it here or at other companies, but have been with Regent for over 20 years now.

The dealership started off as an Audi Mercedes and Volkswagen dealership. We now specialise in new and used Volkswagens under the guise of an official franchise dealer, and as an official workshop for Mercedes, of which we also sell used vehicles, and new cars to order.

In addition to car sales, we are a full service garage, from MOTs to body shop work, and also offer car and van hire. We employ 17 staff.

Q What types of vehicle do you stock? We stock the full range of new and used Volkswagens, with prices ranging from between pounds 2-3,000 to pounds 50,000.

Popular models are the Golf and Polo, followed by the Passat, and then we have the likes of the Golf GTI, which is always a hit with the customers.

New models like the Scirocco have had some great reviews, so we are looking forward to getting some more in stock.

VWs are obviously quality cars, and are excellent at holding their values.

On the Mercedes side, again we can obtain all models for sale, and I would say that about a third of our sales are of used models, while the rest are new models which we can source from the manufacturer on request.

Q What kind of effect has the government's scrappage scheme had on your business? Volkswagen has been active within the scrappage scheme, and I feel the scheme has had a certain amount of success in terms of getting rid of a lot of the slack in the market.

The one problem I see though is that due to the fact so many smaller cars have been scrapped, fewer are now available on the market.

It means there is less choice for first time buyers to buy the cheaper older models.

Many Golfs and Polos are ideal for this market, but will have been scrapped in exchange for a discount on a new car.

Q What does the dealership pride itself on? The fact that we can offer a full service experience for our customers, from buying a new or used car, through to servicing and MOTs.

We know that buying a car should be an enjoyable experience as there''s something tangible involved. When you car breaks down it's not, but we still try and take the pain out of the process as much as possible.

Customer satisfaction is also very important, and we are ranked comfortably in the top 50 of VW's customer satisfaction index.

This covers all of VW's dealerships across the UK, which numbers over 250, so this is a great source of pride for us.

Q Which future developments do you look forward to in the industry? The future is more fuel efficient engines. This means that the likes of the Polo Blue Motion can hit 80mpg.

We look forward to getting more of these in stock and more new models will all be adopting this technology.
