A different kind of doner; A NEW RESTAURANT SERVING UP HIGHQUALITY KEBABS IS COMING TO THE CORN EXCHANGE LATER THIS YEAR.
Byline: DAISY JACKSON
HUGE restaurant dedicated to quality doner kebabs is opening later this year in Manchester city centre.
ADoner Haus will be taking over the vacant former Byron Hamburgers site in the Corn Exchange.
It's a big footprint to fill and will have 180 covers on the ground floor alone, serving up Berlin-style quality kebabs and currywurst.
The two-storey unit, which faces onto Cathedral Gardens, has mostly stood empty since Bryon shut up shop, though was briefly used by Fred Sirieix and co for the most recent series of Million Pound Menu.
The menu at Doner Haus will centre around Berlin-style doner meat, served on sourdough flatbreads, Turkish pidas or kohbez durum and topped with fresh salad and herbs, with the house doner costing PS7.70.
There are vegan and vegetarian options too, from a vegan schnitzel to falafel to halloumi.
As well as kebabs, the high-quality meats can be served on a bed of chips, with both meaty and vegan takes on currywurst popping up.
Sanjeev Sanghera, founder and CEO of Doner Haus, hopes to completely alter people's perceptions of doner kebabs with his restaurant concept.
He said: "It's been found that in the UK doner is sometimes only as little as 25% meat, and that's not what we're about at all. Our meat content is extremely high, there's no oil or wheat to fill it up."
Sanjeev has made dozens of trips to Germany while developing his menus, sourcing meat to go inside flatbreads made in their own bakery.
Kebabs aren't in his background until recently though - Sanjeev says his family opened the first Indian restaurant in Glasgow in 1967 (one that even appeared in Robbie Coltrane's B-Road Britain documentary and book), and he was running his own Indian restaurant when he and his partner came up with the idea for Doner Haus.
"My partner read a piece about kebabs," he said, "And that the best kebabs in the world are in Berlin. So we went over there - it was our first proper time off in about three years of working 100 hour weeks - and it just changed our lives. It completely changed our whole journey.
"In Berlin people order them as often and in the same way we order sandwiches.
"We're really excited to be opening in Manchester - it's been about two years in the making.
? Doner Haus hopes to be open at the Corn Exchange this autumn, and will be open from 11am to 11pm Sunday to Thursday, and 11am to midnight on Fridays and Saturdays.
