A closer look behind a prominent promotion: This Week: Allan Gates, president, American College of Environmental Lawyers.
New Job: Allan Gates was appointed president of the American College of Environmental Lawyers during the group's annual meeting. The professional association is dedicated to maintaining and improving the ethical practice of environmental law, the administration of justice and the development of environmental law at the state and federal level. "The members of the college are the very best environmental lawyers in the country," Gates said in a press release. The college sponsors regional and national meetings, domestic and international pro bono projects, a prizewinning blog and collaborative interactions with state and federal environmental regulators.
Experience: Gates is a partner at Mitchell Williams Selig Gates & Woodyard in Little Rock and centers his practice on environmental, environmental and toxic tort, and commercial litigation. He has served as defense counsel in hazardous waste and Superfund actions, as well as counsel in air pollution, water pollution, toxic tort, wetlands, environmental impact statement and coastal management disputes and litigation.
Background: Gates earned his law degree from Vanderbilt University Law School and a Bachelor of Arts from Yale. He was law clerk to Chief Judge Pat Mehaffy of the 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals and Associate Justice Harry A. Blackmun of the U.S. Supreme Court. He is an adjunct professor at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock's Bowen School of Law, and has been a guest lecturer at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences and UA-Little Rock. He is a charter member of the Arkansas Bar Commission on Diversity, original incorporator and chairman of the board of the Old State House Museum Associates and charter secretary of the Arkansas Nature Conservancy board of trustees.
