A close shave as Chris judges Movember 'taches.

TEESSIDE'S Olympic long jumper Chris Tomlinson joined members of staff at a college for a close shave to rid the facial hair they had been growing for charity.

The 33-year-old from Nunthorpe joined members of staff at Middlesbrough College as they cast off the moustaches they've been growing since November 1 as part of a Movember Final Shave.

Movember is a month-long fundraising drive that sees moustaches grown across the country to raise awareness of men's health, including men's cancers.

Around 20 male members of staff signed up to Movember, with some of the female staff volunteering to be 'Mo-sisters' - women who don fake moustaches to support the events and boost the fundraising.

Students from the Barbering Level 3 course got busy with the trimmers during the Final Shave and Level 3 Music Technology students provided the entertainment.

Chris was asked to judge a 'Best Moustache' competition - the award went to Trevor Brewis, the college's director of visual and performing arts.

Tom Metcalfe, project manager at the college, said: "It's always a popular event in the calendar with staff and students boosting the funds, and we're very grateful to Chris for supporting the college by getting involved in the Final Shave."

The final amount raised has yet to be calculated but is expected to exceed PS1,000.

Middlesbrough-born Chris is working in partnership with the college on the preventative health initiative Extra Life.

Extra Life involves four of Teesside's largest employers - Teesside University, Middlesbrough Council, South Tees Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and Middlesbrough College - working together for the first time to improve work environments and boost the health and wellbeing of staff, students and the local community.
