A chopper for coppers.

SCOTLAND'S largest police force yesterday unveiled a state-of-the-art helicopter to help stamp out crime.

Strathclyde Police is the first force in Britain to adopt the super helicopter which is faster, quieter, can fly longer and carry more passengers than other helicopters in use.

However, the chopper, estimated to cost around pounds 1million a-year to lease from company Bond, has come under criticism.

Socialist MSP Tommy Sheridan said the cash would have been better spent on more officers.

He said: "The force is understaffed by 350 people and they choose to spend over pounds 1m a-year on a helicopter."

But Chief Constable John Orr hit back. He said: "It will actually enhance the work done by officers.

"It will help find missing people and criminals in hiding using heat-seeking equipment. "
