A challenge for young designers.

Teams of young designers are putting the final touches to their plans to turn a stretch of wasteland in Bishop Auckland into the eighth wonder of County Durham.

The ambitious task has been set by construction company MMP Group, based in Newton Aycliffe, in partnership with CITB Construction Skills, the construction industry training board, and Aimhigher County Durham ( a national programme which encourages students to go into higher education.

Eight teams from four schools across County Durham are competing in the Enterprise in Construction Challenge (EICC) to design an iconic feature for a vacant site at Bondgate, Bishop Auckland.

The students are being encouraged to use their imaginations for their designs for the "Eighth Wonder of County Durham" and entries are expected to include buildings, artistic structures and gardens.
