A builder ahead of his time.

When an imaginative builder scouted around decaying castles and period villages for materials for his new project at the turn of the century, he earned himself the description of being-ecentric.

But today, the homes constructed by the late Major Hutchinson Smith have stood the test of time. From Stratford-on-Avon to-Wolver-Hampton they are a Midlands-wide testimony to his forward thinking.

Only wealthy home owners are able now to consider using in their new homes the wealth of material of which Major Smith was a pathfinder.

Stone from Montgomery Castle and bricks, oak and tiles from 17th century Staffordshire properties were incorporated into homes at Castle croft Gardens, Finch field, Wolver Hampton.

Grey stones, being sold through Walker, Barnett & Hill at pounds EUR9,950, got its name from the colour of blocks from the castle incorporated in the inglenook chimney piece.

But timber, bricks and roof tiles all have their own history to tell - and Tudor styling wears easily the hanging tiles in Sussex stile and even sun blinds which give a festive look.

Mrs. Chris Maddocks, who moved to the house with husband, George, nine years ago, said: "As soon as I got to the front door I knew it was the place for us - before -1 ever looked around."

Inside the house maintains its "'baronia atmosphere with rough plastered, colour washed walls instead of wallpapering, yet all the modern requirements of sprucely-tiled bathroom, convenient kitchen and separate laundry.
