A bottomless pith of healthy vitamins; SUPER FOOD.

What is it: A citrus fruit with a slightly bitter flavour. It comes in pink and red varieties as well as yellow. A favourite on the breakfast table,

Why you should eat it: Grapefruit is bursting in vitamin C. Half of one provides more than half an adult's daily requirement. Eat some of the pulpy membrane that separates the segments, and a little pith - this contains pectin which can help lower blood cholesterol levels. Also contains vitamin A, vitamin B6 and folic acid.

Other virtues: The pulp and pith contain bioflavonoids which some experts think neutralise cancer-causing substances.

Did you know: Thin- skinned grapefruits are the best buy. Pink and red are the sweetest and also have more vitamin C.

Have you tried: Adding segments to watercress, cashew nuts and spring onions for a tasty salad.
