A campaign to improve life in a Northumberland town is being launched this week.

The Improving Croft and Cowpen Quay project is holding an All Together Now week with football matches, a street cleaning session, fire safety and crime prevention advice and the opening of a new games area.

Dark secrets

BEST-SELLING children's author Philip Pullman will be giving a lecture at Newcastle University this month as part of the celebrations linked to the opening of Seven Stories, the Newcastle-based Centre for Children's Books.

The event with author of the His Dark Materials series on September 27 is free. Tickets are available from 9am today on (0191) 222-6136.

Virtual world

AN international conference exploring the challenges of using virtual reality in architecture, engineering and construction is being held today and tomorrow at the Durham Marriott Royal County Hotel.

It has been organised by the Centre for Construction Innovation and Research at Teesside University'.

HARTLEPOOL council has given a pounds 15,000 grant to the Business Security Scheme, which helps businesses protect themselves against crime.
