A YEAR AFTER KUWAIT INVASION, SALES OF
 KENTUCKY FRIED CHICKEN THERE DOUBLE
LOUISVILLE, Ky., Jan. 16 /PRNewswire/ -- One year after Kuwait's Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurants were shelled, looted and shut down by war, most of the units are back in business and sales are booming.
Virtually all of the 19 Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) restaurants open before the Iraqi invasion suffered partial damage or total destruction, and some of the restaurants' equipment was stolen. However, since March, 14 KFC restaurants have reopened, and sales are more than double pre-war levels. Sales at most of the restaurants are running at an annual rate equivalent to more than a million dollars.
"Many Kuwaiti families have stayed out of the country during the rebuilding process, but the men who head those households remained at home to work," said Rafiq Rangoonwala, KFC's business development and operations manager for the Middle East. "Many of them choose not to cook or don't know how to cook so they go out to eat virtually all of their meals."
"In addition, many of Kuwait's traditional entertainment centers, like social clubs, carnivals, even fancy restaurants, simply have not reopened," he said. "So KFC has become a social center where people gather to eat and talk."
KFC was among the first restaurants to reopen after the withdrawal of Iraqi troops, according to Rangoonwala. "The credit really goes to our franchisee, Kuwait Food Company," he said. "They had the courage to begin investing millions of dollars to rebuild the restaurants just days after the Iraqis left."
Kentucky Fried Chicken operates and franchises more than 8,400 restaurants in 63 countries.
