A World of Ideas with Bill Moyers: Sara Lightfoot.

PBS, 1989. 29 min., color. Purchase, $39.95 (VHS). In a Peabody Award-winning series, Bill Moyers interviews eminent individuals who have had a lasting effect on society. In this interview, Sara Lawrence Lightfoot offers insights on schools, teachers and the roles they play in America today. Lightfoot is a Harvard Education Professor and author of Worlds Apart: Relationships Between Families and Schools and The Good High School. She focuses her research on quality schools and outstanding teachers, recognizing the existence of many more than the public is led to believe.

Lightfoot considers good teachers, nursery school through college, to be thinkers whose "currency is ideas, ideas as conveyed through relationships." And she tells teachers that they need to see "their own destiny in the eyes of their students"; they need to entrust children with their goals and dreams. Lightfoot also spells out the common characteristics of good schools and offers clear suggestions for school reform. Her responses to Moyers' thoughtful questions reflect the themes of valuing the voice of teachers and restoring dignity to the profession. The video can best be used to promote thoughtful discussion about teachers' concerns and the kind of environment necessary to enhance teaching and learning.
