A Spectrum of Innovation; Color in American Printmaking 1890-1960.

Through erudite writing, one hundred full-color and fifty black-and-white illustrations, this book presents the beauty and vitality of American color printmaking over the past century. The book begins with extensive annotated essays on the basic printmaking processes: relief, intaglio, lithography and serigraphy. One hundred artists are represented with an excellent biography of each artist, a full-page, full-color reproduction of one of their prints, accompanied by an informative discussion of the subject, style and technique of the work. The artists are represented chronologically, beginning with an 1890 aquatint, In the Omnibus by Mary Cassatt, and concludes with a 1960 color lithography by Clinton Adams. It is interesting to note that among such luminaries as Stuart Davis, Stanley Hayter, Maurice Prendergast, James McNeil Whistler and Charles Sheeler, one finds the inclusion of Pedro de Lemos, a past editor of SchoolArts. Although a bit on the expensive side, this book is highly recommended for high school and university libraries along with all artists and teachers with a penchant for printmaking.
