A SALUTE TO SENIORS

 A SALUTE TO SENIORS
SACRAMENTO, Calif., May 1 /PRNewswire/ -- The following was

released by the California Department of Aging:
Gov. Pete Wilson has proclaimed May as Older Californians Month -- a time to celebrate the seniors in this state and the many contributions they have made to our communities, neighborhoods, and individual lives. Nationally, this month is celebrated as Older Americans Month and we in California want to emphasize the significance of the seniors living in this state.
Today, the 60 plus population numbers over 4.2 million and projections for the year 2020 will nearly double that figure to 8.6 million, compromising 22 percent of the state's population. In less than 30 years, seniors will total almost one quarter of California's population.
Older Californians bring with them the wisdom earned by years of experience as they make their way into the Golden Years. While Gov. Wilson points to the myriad contributions made by seniors in this state, perhaps the most salient is the show of love and breadth of tutelage seniors give our children.
Today, in celebration of both generations, and as a kick-off for senior activities throughout the state, Gary Kuwabara, interim director for the California Department of Aging, spoke to seniors during a picnic at the Sacramento Senior Center. Festivities at the senior center included an intergenerational May Pole Dance with seniors from the center and kindergartners from the St. Francis School and a special collage of dances by the Calico Dancers, who happen to be seniors.
Kuwabara said, in addressing the group of seniors, kindergartners and other celebrants, "I know how much value the Governor places on our children's future. And I know that he feels strongly that that future is guided in many ways. Guided not only by parents, but by... grandparents who can hand down their experiences, knowledge and principles which have helped develop the present and will continue to shape the future for us all."
Activities celebrating Older Californians Month will occur throughout the state in places such as senior centers, day care centers, libraries, nutrition sites and city and county park and recreation areas.
