A NEW STUDIO FOR THE DIGITAL AGE: CAMERON, WINSTON, ROSS AND IBM LAUNCH DIGITAL DOMAIN

LOS ANGELES, Feb. 25 /PRNewswire/ -- Writer, director, producer James Cameron, Academy Award winning character creator Stan Winston, renowned special visual effects studio executive Scott Ross, and IBM (NYSE: IBM) today announced the formation of Digital Domain: a new visual effects and digital production studio.
Digital Domain will locate its facilities in the Los Angeles area. Cameron, Winston and Ross will serve on the board of directors of the company with Cameron as chairman. Scott Ross will manage daily operations as President and CEO, while both Cameron and Winston will focus on the company's near and long-term strategic direction.
Digital Domain will combine the latest digital technology with a unique "creator interactive" philosophy. Digital Domain will offer a full range of special visual effects services for feature films, television, commercials and simulator attractions. This platform of technical and creative capability will also allow Digital Domain to create its own intellectual properties for these media, as well as interactive entertainment and education.
"The future of entertainment and communication lies squarely in the digital domain," said James Cameron, writer, producer, and director of Terminator 2: Judgment Day, 1991's top-grossing film. "Digital Domain will be the place for creators to go to realize the pictures in their heads. It will be the most advanced company of its kind in the world. Founded by leaders in the field, and staffed by some of the most creative minds available, the company will provide cutting-edge digital services across a broad spectrum."
"Digital Domain gives the visual artist exciting new tools," said Stan Winston, seven time Academy Award nominee. "These tools will vastly expand our ability to create new characters that engage and excite audiences."
"The digital revolution is spreading from sound to sight," said Scott Ross, under whose leadership Industrial Light & Magic won four academy awards. "Digital Domain will grow and evolve with the new digital medium to help realize its vast potential.
"We are not only investing in Digital Domain, we're investing in the future," said Lucie J. Fjeldstad, IBM vice president and general manager, Multimedia. "Our worlds are quickly converging as the power of digital technology transforms the motion picture industry. High resolution moving images will fundamentally change applications and their development as we know them today. IBM and Digital Domain are positioned to lead this emerging revolution."
Seven of the ten highest-grossing films of all time are "effects" films. But effects and synthetic characters are challenging and often frustrating to produce. Digital Domain feels that while many creators want to utilize effects, they are deterred by the difficulties inherent in their production. Digital Domain's initial mission is to remove the technological hurdles and make effects easy to create and incorporate into creative works.
Digital Domain will advance the use of digital effects and production by combining the latest, most powerful technology with expert staff and an interactive, user-friendly mode of creation. Beginning with a "clean slate", Digital Domain will build systems that provide the artist with new interactive tools. Digital Domain expects to foster a digital renaissance by giving creators the power to shape a simulated character's performance just as they guide and refine a live performance.
It is intended that Digital Domain will be co-owned by IBM and the founders, with each having equal representation on the Digital Domain board. Completion of the agreement is contingent upon the signing of formal contracts which should occur by the end of March.
