A NEW PARK, COMBINING ART AND LANDSCAPING, TO BE DEDICATED TOMORROW
In a city renowned for both its public artworks and its parks, a two-acre site at 18th and Callowhill streets in Philadelphia is about to take its place as the ultimate in the art of landscape.
On Wednesday, June 3, at 4:30 p.m., Connections, a new park built by the Franklin Town Corporation, will be dedicated at a ceremony led by Mayor Edward G. Rendell, thus marking the culmination of the Franklin Town project for the revitalization of the area, begun 20 years ago.
The $1 million park, situated between 18th and 19th streets, north of Callowhill and south of Spring Garden Street, was designed by the Greek-born artist Athena Tacha, whose dream was to create a space that would allow people to connect with each other, and with art.
Dominated by clusters of boulders, the space includes 20,000 perennial flowering ground-cover plants, arranged in multi-tiered curving terraces, 51 trees, lighted walkways, and 29 benches, all strategically placed for social interaction.
The park, part of the city's One Percent for the Arts Program, cost in excess of the minimum required. But John McShane, Franklin Town Corporation president, said it's worth the cost.
"Since the beginning, we wanted something unique to tie the neighborhood together, provide a focal point," he said. "Connections does that, beautifully."
Media coverage is invited; excellent photo opportunity.
