A Lucky break for Eugene.
Byline: Paul Denison The Register-GuardLucky Moyo, a Zimbabwean musician and teacher, will be in Eugene beginning Monday and continuing through March 7 as an artist-in-residence sponsored by Kutsinhira Cultural Arts Center.
Moyo will work intensively with students in four elementary schools and at the University of Oregon. He also will conduct three community workshops and take part in two public performances.
Moyo is a member of Black Umfolozi, an internationally known group of singers and dancers from Bulawayo, Zimbabwe. "The Rough Guide to World Music" describes Black Umfolozi as "an amazing live experience with their precise and acrobatic singing and dancing to a strong Zulu beat."
The guide also describes the group as akin to Ladysmith Black Mambazo, and says one feature of its shows is a South African miners' gumboot dance.
Moyo lives in Zimbabwe and in Cambridge, England, where he is working on a master's degree. He has performed with the Paul Winter Consort and has conducted workshops at Zim- babwean music festivals in Seattle and in Seaside, Calif.
In Eugene, he will teach traditional African dance, drumming and singing at Corridor, Willakenzie and Iriving elementaries and, the Village School. At the university, he will work with Rita Honka and Dance Africa, as well as with Cedric Weary's UO Gospel Choir.
His workshop schedule:
Shosholoza singing, 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Feb. 27 at Kutsinhira Cultural Arts Center, 3604 W. Fourth Ave.
Muchongoyo drum and dance workshop from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Feb. 28 at the WOW Hall, 291 W. Eighth Ave.
South African miners' gumboot dance, 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. March 7, Eugene YMCA, 2055 Patterson St.
Each workshop will cost $12 for Kutsinhira members, $15 for the general public. The package price for all three will be $30 for Kutsinhira members, $40 for others. To register in advance, contact Erin Ely at eely @comcast.net or 338-9010.
On March 5, Moyo will perform at Sam Bond's Garage, 405 Blair Blvd., with Portland-based Zimbabwean musician Loveness Wesa and two Eugene groups, Vakasara Mbira and Kudana Marimba. This will be a benefit show for Kutsinhira's Zimbabwe Community Development Project. The cover charge is $5 to $10.
Moyo also will perform during an African community night in the university's Dougherty Dance Theatre on March 6, but that show is sold out.
Kutsinhira Cultural Arts Center is a nonprofit organization that holds classes and ensemble practice sessions five nights a week at a rented warehouse in west Eugene.
