A specialist in non-Christian religious communities in the US, Bowen presents the first academic work to examine in depth the history of white Americans converting to Islam before 1975. He looks both at the history of the conversions themselves and at the social and religious transformations that led to and shaped the phenomenon of white Americans becoming Muslims. The best known convert, Alexander Russell Webb, has been the only one most scholars knew of, he says, so they have tended to generalize from him and make blanket assumptions about all converts, so he emphasizes the variety of ideological, social, and organizational forces at work in conversion.
