A DASH TO THE TOILET! Motorised loo claims speed record.

Byline: Neil Atkinson Head of News

TWO Brighouse men are claiming a new world land speed record for a motorised toilet.

The lavatory, ridden by Shaun Walker and designed by Trevor Duckworth, reached 70.9mph (114 km/h) at Elvington Airfield near York.

Now the pair are waiting for the record to be ratified by the Guinness records offi-cials, but in the meantime plan to set off to the Isle of Man famed for its TT races.

They will be there at the weekend to take the speedy loo on a tour of the island.

Mr Duckworth, the man who designed and built the toilet, said he was "absolutely delighted".

The result has to be ratified by Guinness World Records, which has the current record as 42.25mph (68 km/h) set in Italy in 2011.

In 2012, a Canadian stuntwoman Jolene Van Vugt recorded a speed of 46mph (75km/h) in Sydney, although this appears not to have been verified as a world record.

Mr Duckworth said the record was broken in just one attempt run.

He had converted a former go-kart, bought on eBay, and changed the steering mechanism from a wheel to handlebars.

"We are very, very flushed with success. It's been fun building. It's been fun with all the jokes and the backchat about it. It's been absolutely brilliant.

"We had reached 63mph on a practice run but made a few tweaks and Shaun drove because he's lighter than me. Now we will look at doing further work to build the world's first toilet to break 100mph."
