A Code of Practice for Microbiology Laboratories Handling Food Samples

Edited by R P Betts and P Bankes Identified as their Technical Manual No. 21, this Campden publication follows on from the efforts of QA/QC Working Party of their Microbiology Panel.

Whilst it may sound obvious, it is essential to develop and maintain good laboratory procedures if meaningful results are to be obtained. This document is not concerned with the health and safety of laboratory workers but it does deal with the techniques that are necessary to ensure asepsis.

After discussing briefly personal hygiene and safety the various sections of the text carry titles: Laboratories; Equipment; Methods; Hygienic precautions during examinations; Sampling and counting; Preparation of a pure culture; Cleaning the laboratory; Sending cultures by post; followed by a series of six appendices.

It is obvious from the above that the text is succinct and practical, and a list of references has been included.
