A Bowl a Day May Keep Tumors Away. (Pilot Study Findings).
A group of 14 patients ingested the "selected vegetable" soup, developed by Alexander S. Sun, Ph.D., for periods ranging from 2 to 46 months. One patient remained tumor free for more than 133 months, Dr. Sun said at a conference on complementary and alternative therapies for cancer, sponsored by the Center for Mind-Body Medicine and the University of Texas, Houston.
Median survival for the other 12 patients was 33.5 months, and survival at 1 year was 55%, a three-fold prolongation, compared with controls, said Dr. Sun of the Connecticut Institute for Aging and Cancer, Milford, Conn.
No patients experienced any toxicity from the soup, he noted.
Dr. Sun has been studying the effects of his soup since his mother developed non--small cell lung cancer in 1984. Despite chemotherapy and radiation, her disease progressed to stage IV. Dr. Sun, then a biochemist associated with the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York, began researching traditional Chinese treatments. The result was his freeze-dried soup.
Dr. Sun's mother remains alive and well.
This pilot study was undertaken on the recommendation of the Cancer Advisory Panel for Complementary and Alternative Medicine of the National Cancer Institute, which reviewed the findings of a phase I/II study of the herbal preparation presented by Dr. Sun at a meeting in July 1999.
