A'Suwaiq, Saham and Sohar under Agricultural Quarantine for Fusarium Wilt of Banana.

Muscat, Oct 9(ONA) ----An authorized source at the Agriculture and Fisheries Ministry said the Ministry has identified the Wilayats of A' Suwaiq, Saham and Sohar as zones of agricultural quarantine following the discovery of some banana plantations developed disease/Panama/, also known as Fusarium wilt of banana The source said in a statement to Oman News Agency (ONA) today that the disease is caused by a fungus which can lead to yellowing and discoloration in leg and then in a complete banana plants wilt, noting that the disease spread from farm to another through infected planting stock. The ministerial decision No. 194/2012/aims to reduce transfer of shoots or remnants of banana farms to prevent the spread of the disease to uninfected farms. The source added that the fruits of banana plants in the infected areas are consumable, as the disease affects the roots of banana plants and legs only and does not affect the fruits. It should be noted that the disease is currently controlled by removing infected plants and reduce the transmission of banana shoots from the infected areas to uninfected ones. ---Ends/MN/FS
