A&W BRANDS REPORTS FIRST QUARTER NET EARNINGS INCREASE OF 17 PERCENT
WHITE PLAINS, N.Y., April 16 /PRNewswire/ -- A&W Brands, Inc. (NASDAQ: SODA), today announced net earnings of $3,953,000 or $.43 per share, on net sales of $26,864,000 for the three-month period ended March 31, 1992. In the first quarter of 1991, A&W reported net earnings of $3,367,000 or $.37 per share, on net sales of $25,164,000.
"Our 1992 first quarter net sales increased a healthy 7 percent over the comparable 1991 period," said M.L. Lowenkron, chairman and chief executive officer, "resulting in net earnings growth of over 17 percent versus 1991. Unit sales to our domestic bottlers grew a solid 5 percent; however, our international shipments were down due to the timing of shipments between quarters and a lagging softness in certain international markets. We expect our international business to improve over the balance of the year.
"Particularly pleasing," added Lowenkron, "were the continued strong results of our core domestic business achieved through effective marketing support for all of our brands.
"In the first quarter," Lowenkron continued, "we were most pleased to announce a 10 percent increase in our regular quarterly dividend, raising the dividend from $0.10 to $0.11 per common share, which was paid on April 15, 1992. This increase was based on the company's continued earnings growth and future prospects. The company was also pleased to announce its agreement with Tetley Inc., giving A&W the exclusive U.S. manufacturing and distribution rights to all ready-to- drink iced tea products of Tetley. The products will include Tetley's existing ready-to-drink tea business and Tetley's new product, an all natural, real brewed, ready-to-drink tea."
Lowenkron also said that the quarter includes the March operating results for the Tetley ready-to-drink tea business, which, at this time, are immaterial.
Lowenkron concluded, "The company continues to strengthen its core businesses with all of our brands positioned for solid growth. As a result, we expect the balance of the year to once again show record- setting sales and earnings."
