 A&P TO INSTALL UNIQUEST'S INNOVATIVE SELF-CHECKOUT
JACKSONVILLE, Fla., Oct. 29 /PRNewswire/ -- The Great Atlantic &

Pacific Tea Company (NASDAQ: GAP) (A&P) and UNIQUEST Incorporated (NASDAQ: UQST) jointly announced today a division-wide rollout of UNIQUEST's patented customer self-checkout system -- the Automated Checkout Machine (ACM(R)). The ACM uses laser bar code scanner/scales and a proprietary merchandise security system that verifies each item scanned, allowing shoppers to scan and checkout their own groceries before paying at centrally located cashiers.
When Gerry Good, chairman and CEO of A&P Canada, was asked about the decision to implement self-checkout throughout his division, he stated, "We're excited to initiate a program that is designed with customer service in mind because that's what built the A&P organization -- a commitment to providing top quality customer service. It's a system that is easy and fun for customers to use, enhancing their shopping experience and saving them time. Another benefit to the UNIQUEST self- checkout machines is the fact that they're open all of the time, thereby reducing lines. For these reasons, we anticipate that the ACMs will significantly increase our market share."
Installation of the innovative self checkout system is scheduled to begin in January of 1993. Following successful pilot testing of the system in the chain's supermarkets in the northeastern and midwestern United States, A&P management decided to implement a division-wide rollout of the ACM. Primary reasons for the decision were improved customer service, increased accuracy of the checkout process, and an opportunity to increase market share for the stores using self-checkout. A&P currently operated nearly 1,300 stores across North America.
According to August P. Klein, president and CEO of UNIQUEST, "The automated checkout machine is an attractive and user friendly alternative for supermarket shoppers, and it also makes sound business sense. We believe that it will be implemented by groceries worldwide, and when you consider that there are an estimated 140,000 stores and 600,000 grocery checkout lanes in the U.S. alone, the market potential here for self-checkout is tremendous. And with the addition of the European market, the opportunity more than doubles."
