93 million people in Egypt on World Population Day: CAPMAS.

By: Egypt Today staff CAIRO -- 11 July 2017: Marking World Population Day, the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS) said that Egypt's population is expected to reach 93.332 million by July 11, 2017. In a press statement to commemorate World Population Day, which is celebrated each year on July 11, CAPMAS published statistics and data visualizations related to the nation's current state. According to the CAMPAS statement made on Tuesday, the governorate of Cairo has the highest population with 9.6 million residents at the beginning of 2017. Comparatively, the South Sinai governorate is the least populated with only 171,000 residents. The report stated that to the average age of Egyptian men climbed to 70.8 in 2017 from 66.5 in 2006. The average age of women increased from 69.1 as reported in 2016 to 73.6 in 2017. World Population Day started in 1989 by the Governing Council of the United Nations Development Program after the global population had reached five billion, as reported by the United Nations Population Fund on July 11, 1987. The General Assembly of the UN decided to continue observing this day through resolution 45/216 in December 1990. The day is observed as a way to spread awareness about population issues like family planning and the woes of overpopulation, including how they relate to the environment and development. This year's theme is "Family Planning: Empowering People, Developing Nations."
