A declaration was made by the 88-Generation on the occasion of the 31st anniversary 8888 popular uprising which says that it needs to remove Tatmadaw (military) absolutely from involving in politics for enabling democracy flourishing and building federal union in the country.

This 31st anniversary 8888 uprising ceremony was held yesterday, August 8, at Mahabandoola Square in front of Yangon Town Hall.

One of the 88-Generation student leaders Mya Aye read a statement which said, 'The essence and objective of this 8888 popular uprising was democracy flourishing in the country and the current political necessity is building a federal union so we need to remove Tatmadaw from politics which is granted to them by 2008 constitution.'

The statement further says that the government cannot yet fulfil one of the demands made on the occasion of the silver jubilee of the uprising for either amending or rewriting this 2008 constitution.

Mahn Poe Aye (Wakema) who took part in this uprising and attended today's ceremony said, 'I have no regret taking part in this uprising but I feel sorry for sacrificing our lives and wasting our time in it.'

88-Generation students also said that the objectives of the uprising had not been fulfilled and justice could not yet be brought for those who gave their lives though it has been 31 years.

The statement further says that incumbent government, 88-Generation students, successive political generations and ethnic forces should join hands to fulfil the unfinished objectives of this 8888 popular uprising in alliance.

Event organizers said that the incumbent government must resolve the issues including ending civil war, peace, rule of law, justice, stopping human rights violations, prosperity and development of the country and overcoming the current constitution crisis by joining hands with the people.
