By Analou De Vera

A total of 840 new cases of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) were recorded in April, the Department of Health (DOH) said.

The number is lower than the 924 HIV cases recorded during the same period last year, based on the data from the DOH-Epidemiology Bureau released Friday.

Of the total cases reported last April, 20 percent, or 165 cases, had "clinical manifestations of advanced HIV infection," the DOH noted.

The DOH also bared that there was a total of 189 deaths due to HIV/AIDS.

Sexual contact remains the predominant mode of transmission with 819 cases.

Another mode of transmission was needle sharing among injecting drug users with five cases. Three cases of mother-to-child transmission were also recorded, while 13 cases had no data on the mode of transmission.

"Four were pregnant at the time of diagnosis. Two cases were from Region 4A (Calabarzon) and one case each from Regions 1 (Ilocos Region) and 10 (Northern Mindanao)," the DOH said.

The DOH noted that majority of the cases were from the National Capital Region (NCR) with 271 cases.

It was followed by Calabarzon with 137 cases; Central Luzon with 92 cases; Central Visayas with 65 cases; and Western Visayas with 55 cases.

For the first four months of this year, there are now 4,274 new HIV cases recorded.

"The first case of HIV infection in the Philippines was reported in 1984. Since then, there have been 66,303 confirmed HIV cases reported," the DOH noted.
