800 BARS TO PROMOTE "DESIGNATED DRIVER" PROGRAMS
COLUMBUS, Ohio, Nov. 22 /PRNewswire/ -- Retail establishments and

alcohol servers throughout Ohio have given the thumbs up signal to the Ohio Department of Highway Safety's Holiday Designated Driver program by ordering thousands of campaign materials.
Highway Safety Director Charles Shipley said, "This remarkable response shows that bars, taverns, restaurants and other liquor permit holders have taken a responsible attitude about their customers drinking and driving. And this means the designated driver message will be conveyed to those who need it."
The Designated Driver Campaign, which began two years ago, provides free materials such as cocktail napkins, posters, t-shirts, server buttons and patron stickers, idea sampler and a compact disc and video tape of the "Party Animals" music. The Party Animals are four dancers in costume who bring the designated driver message to Ohioans through music.
Shipley reported that last year in Ohio 623 people died and another 27,000 were injured in alcohol-related crashes.
Designated Driver materials were also provided to state liquor stores, MADD chapters, safety councils and deputy registrar offices. All materials were paid for by a grant by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, U.S. DOT.
