8 feet of fence lifts out when needed.

Landscaping projects are easier with a removable fence section like the one shown here. Homeowners Edward Eng and Charles Hostetter of Novato, California, designed an 8-foot-long panel that lifts out when they need to off-load top-soil, shrubs, or trees.

The tall fence gives the house privacy and keeps messes out of sight. The removable panel matches the rest of the fence, which has pairs of 2-by-2s sandwiched between offset 1-by-6s. They're all mounted to 2-by-4 crosspieces that extend slightly at each end. For shadow effect, 2-by-8s flank 4-by-4 posts that reach above the fence and are boxed by beveled 2-by-12s. Above each fence panel, two horizontal 2-by-4s with spacers between them attach to the posts. The ones above the removable panel can be lifted out.
