8 arrests by B-Test officers.

A CRACKDOWN on drink and drug driving has seen eight motorists charged.

In just six days the Operation Dragoon team have arrested and charged the eight with drink driving offences and summonsed another two for driving under the influence of drugs.

During the month of action checkpoints have been set up across the Northumbria force area to target suspected motorists.

Every officer has been armed with a breathalyser and a drug testing kit while members of the Dragoon team have also been using a drugs kits donated by Draeger.

Motor Patrols Chief Inspector John Heckels, who leads the team, said: "Extra patrols are out across the force and we will pull you over and test you if we suspect you have had a drink.

"In just under a week we have already carried out numerous tests on the roadside and we will carry on testing those we suspect of breaking the law."

"Drink and drug driving is a serious offence and we will not tolerate people putting innocent lives at risk by getting behind the wheel when they are not fit to drive."

Those charged include: Kristoffer Davies, 57, of Walwick, Northumberland, |charged with drink driving in Hexham on December 1. Louise Young, 24, of Dunlin Drive, Blyth, charged |with drink driving in Jesmond on December 2. Ian McCabe, 32, of Flodden Road, Sunderland, |charged with drink driving, aggravated vehicle taking and failing to stop after an accident in Houghton on December 3. John Cullen, 69, of Bilton Hall Road, Jarrow, charged |with failing to provide a specimen in Jarrow on December 4. Lucy Brown, 41, of Windhill Lane, Marske-by-the-|Sea, charged with drink driving, driving without a licence and driving without insurance in West Boldon on December 4. Ruth Holland, 38, of Wheatfield Road, Westerhope, |charged with drink driving on December 5. Gareth Jackson, 33, of Rectory Road, Gateshead, |charged with drink driving on December 5. Lewis Smith, 29, of Hillmead, Chester-le-Street, |charged with drink driving and dangerous driving in Whitley Bay on December 6. A 26-year-old man and a 19-year-old woman have |been summonsed to court for driving under the influence of drugs after being stopped in Whitley Bay and Blaydon last week.
