78 in shop gas attack.

DOZENS of people were taken to hospital yesterday after a gas attack on a chain store.

At least 78 were overcome by fumes and 66 needed medical treatment after Maksidom in St Petersburg, Russia, was hit.

Gas canisters fitted with timers were also found in three other stores owned by the furnishings and hardware chain.

The shops had received letters threatening to disrupt the holiday sales.

The substance was thought to be methyl mercaptan, added to natural gas to give it an odour and harmful in large amounts.
