73 TRUANTS FOUND IN CITY CENTRE.

POLICE officers and a dedicated truancy team found 73 children in the city centre this week whose parents had allowed them to miss school.

Operation Thornhill sees officers from the Safer Schools Partnership and the City Council's Truancy Watch join up to catch pupils illegally skipping class.

Three or more subteams work across the city centre at times when truanting is highest.

Two pupils were sent back to school on Monday after coming to town to get tickets to see X Factor's Rebecca Ferguson in concert.

Constable Les Harvey, leader of the truancy team, said: "One mum had phoned the school to say they were ill when in fact they were queuing up."

Three pupils were also sent back to class after going to the student protest in the city centre on Wednesday.
