727-QUIET FREIGHTER MAKES PUBLIC FLIGHT DEBUT
 SAN ANTONIO, Texas, July 8 /PRNewswire/ -- A UPS B727-100 aircraft,

re-engined with new Rolls-Royce Tay engines by The Dee Howard Co., made its first public flight here today before a gathering of government, industry and community officials.
To date, two aircraft in the test program have logged more than 89 hours in what is considered an exemplary flight test program. FAA certification is scheduled for this fall.
According to UPS, Rolls-Royce and Dee Howard officials, the two aircraft, each powered by three Rolls-Royce Tay 651-54 engines, have met or exceeded every expectation set for the 727-Quiet freighter program.
Today's flight demonstration at the San Antonio International Airport exhibits the significant noise reduction characteristics offered by the Quiet Freighter when compared to an unmodified Boeing 727 aircraft.
The 15,100-pound-thrust engines will allow the re-engined aircraft to operate at noise levels well below those required by Federal Aviation Administration Stage 3 regulations. Additionally, the Tay engines will result in fuel savings, considerably reduced emissions and maintenance costs, increased payload range and improved aircraft field performance. UPS, the launch customer for the 727-Quiet Freighter, has placed firm orders for 40 conversions and has options for an additional 40. Cost of re-engining the first 40 aircraft is $400 million.
The program is being carried out by Alenia -- part of IRI Finmeccanica Group -- at its wholly-owned subsidiary, The Dee Howard Co., San Antonio, Texas. The Dee Howard installation required a complete engineering redesign of the S-Duck and center engine inlet, modified pylons and associated airframe structure. Also required were newly-designed nacelles, target-type thrust reversers, new engine attachments and modification to engine-related systems.
"We are extremely pleased with the progress of the re-engining program. This effort will insure UPS's compliance with federal noise regulations well in advance of the deadlines and will also meet our own requirements for reliability and efficiency," said Pat Donahoe, vice president UPS Aircraft Maintenance and Engineering.
UPS leads the air express industry with 64 percent of its fleet currently meeting Stage 3 requirements. Upon completion of the first 40 727-QF aircraft in 1995, about 95 percent of the UPS fleet will meet Stage 3 requirements.
