7 things you never knew about... LAURENCE FOX.

1 Born in 1978 in Yorkshire, his acting family include father James, uncle Edward and cousin Emilia. He is the third of five children and his younger brother Jack - "better looking and a better actor than me" - makes a guest appearance in Lewis.

2 Laurence was expelled from his public school, Harrow, a few weeks before his A levels for smoking, fighting and seeing girls. He embarked on a series of jobs as he worked out what he really wanted to do with his life. He was briefly a gardener, a bar man and a seismology data analyst - "I lied on my CV and was sacked very quickly after they realised I had no understanding of rock strata".

It was his father who suggested he consider acting and he got into RADA on his second attempt.

3 Before he had even graduated, Laurence had a part in the horror film The Hole, which included a love scene with a 15-year-old Keira Knightley. He's played Prince Charles, one of Jane Austen's suitors (Becoming Jane) and the Lord Chancellor of England (Elizabeth: The Golden Age).

4 He met Billie Piper in the West End play Treats and they married on New Year's Eve 2007. Their son Winston is now 18 months and they live in a "ramshackle" cottage in a rural part of West Sussex, away from the limelight and paparazzi.

5 He admits he never watched Inspector Morse, of which Lewis is a spin-off, because it "wasn't my cup of tea". Fortunately for him, Kevin Whately watches his work - after spotting him in Colditz, he recommended him for Lewis. "Kevin loves to take credit for it," he smiles.

6 He was given a police caution in 2007 for punching a photographer in a brawl outside a West End theatre. He says he "bitterly regrets" lashing out.

7 He wiles away his spare time on set by fishing. After a drunken lunch on honeymoon he got a tattoo on his left wrist that reads Mrs Fox 31-12-07. Billie has a matching one that says Mr Fox.
