69 people attempt to commit suicide in south of Kyrgyzstan in 2014.

Osh interregional unified clinical hospital received 69 patients, who committed suicide attempt in 2014, head of emergency medical aid department of the hospital said on December 29.

45 cases of suicide were analyzed. Among them, 7 (15.5%) men and 38 (84.5%) women were attempting to commit suicide.

Patients age distributed as follows: up to 20 years - 23 cases (51%) (including 9 students), from 21 to 25 years - 10 cases (22%), 26-36 years - 6 cases (13%), and 36 years old or older - 6 cases (13%).

"Fortunately, thanks to the professionalism of the medical employees, all of them survived. The methods of suicides were drug poisoning, hanging, acetic essence poisoning, and others. Every year, more than 1.1 million people commit suicide in the world. World Health Organization predicts that 1.5 million people will be committing suicides every year by 2020," the head of the hospital department said.

Since the official statistics usually includes only apparent cases of suicide, the actual number of suicides is much greater than the one shown by official figures. It is believed that each year, more than 4 million people die because of it, he added.

Only 24% of those, who had attempted suicide and got to survive, stay in contact with professional health care system. The number of completed suicides among men is normally 4 times more than among women. On the other hand, women attempt to commit suicide 4 times more often than men do, but they choose the methods, which are significantly less likely to lead to death.

The World Health Organization (WHO) divides all countries in terms of suicide into three groups. High and very high suicide rate, for example, Lithuania, South Korea, Guyana, Kazakhstan, and other countries. The second category is the average suicide rate, which includes Finland, Estonia, France, Moldova, and others. And the last category is the the countries with low suicide rate, which includes Australia, Germany, and Georgia.

In Egypt, Haiti, and Jamaica, the suicide rate is close to zero.

"Among the Post-Soviet countries, the suicides are most often committed in Lithuania, Kazakhstan, and Belarus," head of the hospital department said.
