622 CONRAIL TRAINMEN ACCEPT VOLUNTARY SEPARATION

622 CONRAIL TRAINMEN ACCEPT VOLUNTARY SEPARATION
PHILADELPHIA, March 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Consolidated Rail Corporation

(NYSE: CRR) (Conrail) announced that the first steps have been taken in implementing its new crew consist agreement with the United Transportation Union (UTU) with the voluntary separation of 622 trainmen, effective at 12:01 a.m. March 17.
Each of the 622 trainmen will receive a $65,000 cash payment.
At the same time, the brakeman's position was eliminated from all through trains which, as a result, now operate with two-person crews: engineer and conductor. Engineers are represented by a different union and are not a party to the UTU-Conrail agreement. Most local and yard trains will operate with three-person crews until 1995, when brakeman positions on these trains will begin to be phased out.
A reserve pool of about 600 positions has been established. Surplus employees not taking voluntary separations have been placed in the pool, which will be phased out as additional employees accept voluntary separation.
When all initial requests for voluntary separations are processed, the total number of separations of trainmen may increase by about 20 percent over the 622 announced today.
Conrail operates a rail-freight transportation network in 14 Northeastern and Midwestern states, the District of Columbia, and the Province of Quebec.
